What a Flow Control Valve Does

But that doesn’t mean it’s always required.


When You Don’t Need a Flow Control Valve

You can skip the flow control valve if:

  • Your system is PTO-controlled, meaning the pump only runs when the PTO is engaged.
  • Your hydraulic pump and motor are properly matched for the application.
  • You're comfortable controlling the speed through engine RPM or other onboard adjustments.

In these cases, the system is simple, efficient, and avoids unnecessary plumbing, pressure drops, or heat buildup.

Note: For most operators running hydraulic-driven accessories like vane pumps, especially on PTO-driven setups, this approach works well. However, if your RPM range fluctuates significantly or you’re pushing higher torque loads, it’s worth evaluating whether added flow control could improve consistency or protect your components.
